BIO: While a broad brush might paint Gina Chavez's music as folk, her percussive, fingerstyle guitar playing blends smoothly with techniques that touch the genres of blues, jazz, rock and Latin. Gina's songs emerge from her experiences with travel, relationships, faith and social-consciousness. Her voice rings clear and truthful, punctuating her music with lyrics that come from the heart.
With stylistic comparisons ranging from Joni Mitchell to Alicia Keys, Gina's delivery is versatile and captivating. Her fan base continues to grow, drawing audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Her Austin performances frequently gather upwards of 50 people, many of whom have come to know each other through attendance at her shows.
A performer at the core, Gina's live shows offer everything from thought-provoking and haunting songs to goofy melodies and crowd participation. With accompaniment from the multi-instrument talent of Roel Martinez (guitar, mandolin, bass) and several other musician friends, Gina's gigs are ever-evolving and always new.
Gina's debut album, Hanging Spoons, is the long-awaited answer to fans' pleading for a record. The freshman release captures the earthy, honest sound they have come to know and love, as well as the energy and creativity of her live shows, flavored with a few musical surprises.
Musical History:
2007: Gina performs as one of eight artists in the 2nd Annual citywide Christ Unites music festival.
2006: Gina is personally invited to open for Spoken Groove, an international poetry-rock duo.
2006: Gina is selected to sing with national recording artist David Kauffman during his Austin tour.
2006: Gina opens for internationally renowned musician Tony Melendez in Houston.
2006: Gina wins 2nd place at Fado Irish Pub’s annual singer/songwriter contest.
2005: Gina is invited to join Austin band Before the Throne as a songwriter and musician, performing at various venues around the state. (Hear them now at www.beforethethroneworship.com!)
2003: Gina performs alone on a large stage for the first time as one of 14 acts in the UT campus-wide talent show, Texas Revue, attended by 3,000 people.
2000: Gina salvages a 1954 Martin guitar from her family's closet after hearing Austin's Toni Price perform the Continental Club.
1994-2000: Gina gains experience in a variety of vocal styles and techniques while singing and performing in her middle and high school choirs.
